I have been arguing simular points to people here in Canada about gun control. We have gun control here (like not being able to own fully automatic rifles) but the registry never worked and cost the people 2 BILLION dollars. and that got about 50% of the people to actually register the guns. We have criminalized pot, but that hasen’t stopped the rampant use and buying and selling of it. In fact, I think it may be more pot out there (and stronger strains) than when it was first discovered.

People don’t seem to understand that news channels and newspapers use content to sell “subscriptions”. If you have a story about a mass shooting, that is going to sell a lot more papers than if you talk about how nice it was that bob gave $50,000 to charity.

And even the information that they do share is often inaccurate or false. For example we had a police raid in Toronto and the police seized like 30 handguns. How many of those were actually handguns as the media reported? I saw a number of sawed off 10/22s and rimfire rifles from the pictures alone. The word Pistol, much like the term assault is a buzz word that gets people going. And criminals are not going to obey the law, they are going to saw down the rifles to hide them. That is why they are called criminals. They commit crimes.

People are scared of guns that look scary. They go on and on about hunting rifles mostly because they are ornate with beautiful wood stocks and scroll work. Modern firearms with polymer stocks and hard edges LOOK scary. And therefore should be banned, even if they do the same thing.

And don’t get me started on the NRA.
