Great episode. As a police officer, I’ve attended a few classes on Care under Fire where they discussed the TCCC findings from the Gulf war. As Ron mentioned, they found tourniquet use to be safe for longer periods than previously believed. When I researched the subject, I came across a site that said, “never place a tourniquet below the knee or elbow.” Their premise was that due to the dual bones in the shin or arm, the tourniquet would only flex the bones instead of compressing the artery. They said by putting the tourniquet above the joint, the wide band would compress the muscles against the artery and against the main main bone for a more effective seal. Does this agree with Ron’s experience in the field? Should you ever place a tourniquet below the joint?
