Even as a storm spotter working with the hams in the area during the tornadoes, my son was giving me updates via twitter that were faster than the storm spotters. But you also have to remember that someone tweeting a funnel cloud that has no training and a ham spotter can be 2 seperate things, so you have to balance you information intake. Even if you don’t have your ham license get a small handheld 2 meter for $150 brand new.

Jeep,
I’m a spotter as well and I’d to recommend a simple receiver that friends and family could use to listen to SKYWARN spotters. The only thing I can find are 200 channel scanners. What do you recommend?

Listened to this episode on the crammed subway coming out of Washington D.C. after our 5.9 earthquake. I won’t be going out for lunch without my purse and a bottle of water again anytime soon……..Ya just never know……

About three years ago I found myself standing in the cold wearing my sweaty workout clothes at 7am for 45 minutes after the fire alarm went off at my Gym. My car keys, wallet and everything else were sitting in a locker inside I could not get to. I used to mentally make fun of people that kept their backpacks with them at the Gym. Not anymore.
